Well, I did it. I attended my first divorce mediation, and I survived. I’m not sure how the process works in other states, but this is how it goes in my county in Ohio.
The family court judge orders mediation.
Mediation is provided by the county, to divorcing partners, at NO charge.
Mediation takes place at the courthouse with a trained divorce mediator.
Mediation sessions last 2 hours each.
Couples can register for as many mediation sessions as necessary to agree on as many things as possible on their own.
Couples do not bring their lawyers. It’s just the couple and the mediator.
The mediator guides the couple through issues then documents things agreed upon and those left in contention. Afterwards, she (or he) sends their write up of the session to the judge as a progress update
